The index dates back to the 1920s, when early black South African artists began to enter the South African art world, to present. The author/editor of the publication and the date of the publication in brackets are entered into the column recording the decade in which the artwork was produced. The no date column (nd) is used to record images whose date is unknown.

 

 

You can contribute to the South African Artists Index by submitting information about individual artists and where examples of their works have been published; by correcting errors (both in published texts and in the index); or by donating a copy of a relevant publication.

 

 

Conventions used: For purposes of brevity books with more than one author are recorded with only the name of the first author followed by “&” (full/er details are provided in the bibliography).   Catalogues where an author, editor or curator cannot be clearly identified are identified with the name of the event or host institution (eg Dak’Art, Cape Town Triennial, Mobil, etc).   Where the same family name belongs to more than one author and published in the same year, initials are used.   Works that are illustrated with no attribution to the artist are identified as uncredited, with (uc) preceding the author’s name. In cases where some works by an artist are credited and others not, (incl uc) precedes the author.
